Bike It Crew
We are proud to introduce the Bike It Crew initiative to St Augustine’s this year, working with Gemma and Eric from Sustrans. Each class has a representative on the Bike It Crew to help promote Cycling and Scooting to school.
The Bike It Crew have many responsibilities, including awarding the Golden Lock randomly to any cyclist or scooter, carrying out regular bike and scooter counts, class meetings and promoting cycling and scooting throughout the year via competitions – one of the most popular has been ‘Bling It’, a chance for children to decorate their own bike or scooter!
Gemma and Eric from Sustrans visit school for Collective Worships and run different sessions with the children. We have had Dr Bike sessions, where children and staff bring their bikes to be checked over; some problems may even be fixed!
At St Augustine’s we took part in the National Big Pedal, a competition involving 1680 schools across the country, all encouraging each other to cycle or scoot to school. St Augustine’s first attempt saw us finish in 337th position with an average of 40.27% of children coming to school on their bike or scooter. We finished fourth in the Peterborough competition, which was a superb result and our Bike It Crew worked extremely hard to achieve this.
To finish the fortnight off in style we held a Superhero day to raise money for Sustrans, raising £87.62, a lovely finish to a wonderful fortnight.
